Top Athletes and Their Social Media Stats

By the time you read this post, Cristiano Ronaldo will have passed 50 million Likes on his Facebook fan page. 50 million likes! That is about 5% of Facebook’s total population which is absolutely incredible when you think about it. Social media and athletes is a match made in heaven and in fact many of the top influencers in the social media world are athletes. Ronaldo is actually the first athlete in social media to pass the 50 million Like mark although there are a number of musicians and celebrities who have passed that 50 million mark.

The funny thing is that if you look at the list, all of the athletes on there actually use social media responsibly. They don’t talk about their baby mama drama or their cheating wives. They don’t talk too much smack about their competition and they have never had to issue a public apology about something they posted or the perennial boneheaded favorite “my account was hacked,” as if anyone believes that. The truth is that while the controversial stuff is fun to follow in the heat of the moment, the athletes that share quality content with their followers are winning the social media popularity battle. The ones who are controversial or say really provocative stuff get a momentary spike and then quickly disappear again. The proof is right there omn the chart below that quality content wins in the long run.

Sure it may be hard not to say some of the stuff these fierce competitors want to say, but the truly good ones realize that they have become brands and when they say stupid stuff it tarnishes their image and their ultimate value of their brand. Below is a list of athletes who will be around for the long run because the recognize the value of their athletic brands. I am also proud to say that we have worked with 3 of the 10 on the list in one capacity or another in the social media space.

Football + Social Media = Love

As opening day approaches for both the NFL and the English Premier League (soccer for those of you who don’t know), we thought it would be interesting to see who shows their love the most through social media.

When it comes to the leagues themselves, the NFL rules the day on both Facebook and Twitter. The love for the group that runs the game of bone crushing hits between 300lb behemoths with a pigskin is greater in social media than that of the organization who runs the game of futbol…or soccer as we call it here in the United States. The funny thing is that the English Premier League dominates when it come to love for the individual teams. Manchester United is the clear leader with more than 27 million fans on Facebook with both Chelsea and Arsenal boasting more than 11 million fans. That is more than double the number of fans the leading NFL team, The Dallas Cowboys, reach through their Facebook page. Now don’t get me wrong, I think the NFL team pages have a lot better content on them, (take a look at The Pittsburgh Steelers Facebook Page) but the EPL has the whole world as a fanbase, where the NFL fan base is predominantly in the US. Of course, the NFL would likely dispute that, but the numbers don’t lie. The funny thing is that the fan engagement numbers for NFL Teams are slightly higher than those of the EPL teams and at the end of the day it is all about engagement.

Football Leagues and Social Media

While the EPL’s major clubs — which play exhibition matches around the world and compete in the annual international Champions League — have incredibly strong global brands, social numbers suggest that the NFL has higher popularity as a league. The NFL’s official Facebook and Twitter pages total a combined following of about 10 million users, while the equivalent EPL accounts total about 2 million followers. Football and Social Media are here to stay.

Golfers And Social Media

The National Golf Foundation has run a few studies over the past few years to try and determine just how engaged golfers are in the online world. One fo the key areas they look at was social media and the results were surprising to say the least.

They defined “core golfers” as the group that played 85% of all of the rounds and were responsible for more than 85% of all fo the spending in the golf industry. As you might imagine, that group is fairly conservative and not the type of people who you would expect to be very active in the world of social media. Well…it turns out that just the opposite was true. they are extremely engaged with social media and they are a very active group. In fact, they were more engaged with social media and user generated content than the general population.

Take a look at some of these shocking statistics:

60% of core golfers maintain a profile on at least one social network

3.7 million core golfers regularly read blogs about brands, courses, travel and professional golf

6.9 million core golfers visit their primary social network at least once per week

3.9 million core golfers visit their primary social network every day!

These numbers are increasing year over year with no real signs of slowing down. There are hundreds of millions of dollars of golf buying decisions being influenced every day in world of social media. Whether it be through branded social media sites, blogs offering opinions, or golfers sharing their experiences, there is clearly a desire in the golf community to communicate through social media. It makes one wonder how so many brands and athletes can be missing the opportunity that is staring them in the face. The core gold audience is begging for more social media and the brands and players who step up and deliver will reap the rewards.

Ok…so that all sounds great because it is a world of opportunity out there in social media. But there is a down side to all of this as well, and that is the possibility of doing it all wrong. It does not take very long for a mistake to travel around the world these days and become a trending topic on Twitter. Yes that may bring attention to your brand, but is it the attention you want? Obviously that answer is no. The best bet is to hire a professional company to help you with your social media to ensure that you are doing everything right. That is not to say that you need to keep them around forever, but laying a solid foundation is a critical component to a successful social media presence. You need to understand the rules and audience expectations of social media and…you must remember that social media is a two-way conversation. You must have the time, desire and ability to create quality content on a regular basis and then be prepared to respond to questions and comments. Your social media company should help you in the beginning and then teach you how to handle it in house for the long haul.

Remember that there is a huge opportunity out there so you want to get it right. Just because you can engage in social media for free, does not mean it is easy. After all, most golfers have taken golf lessons from a professional or a coach to build their foundation. Don’t you think you might want to follow suit when it comes to your social media efforts?

A Sampling of Dumb Things Athletes Said In Social Media

Just because the word “professional” appears in front of the word athlete, does not mean they act professionally off the field. In fact, there is no shortage of really dumb comments in a variety of social media outlets from some of the most recognizable athletes in the world. You see these men and women are trained in every aspect of the game they play, but are never trained in them social media game. they are not trained in the game of life and as such, they tend to say some really stupid stuff that haunts them for years to come. Social Media Coach For Athletes provides clients with comprehensive training on how and when to use social media to make sure they do not make comments like these…

Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) is the biggest star on one of the world’s most famous teams so you’d think he’d be used to a little criticism. But the Manchester United striker took exception to some clown harrassing him on Twitter and challenged the dude to a fight. Smart!

Here’s the tweet the set Rooney off: “Rooney ya fat whore ill smash ya head in with a pitchin wedge an bury ya with a ballast fork ya fat ugly lil nonse.” (Huh? We hope this makes better sense to our pals across the pond)

Here is Rooney’s reply: I will put u asleep within 10 seconds hope u turn up if u don’t gonna tell everyone ur scared u little nit. I’ll be waiting

(Coming to pay-per-view soon … we hope!)

Reggie Bush of the Saints (@reggie_bush) has found himself in hot water a few times for the content on his Twitter feed. The latest misstep comes in early May when he writes about how much he’s enjoying the NFL lockout:

‘Everybody complaining about the lockout! Shoot I’m making the most of it! Vacation, rest, relaxing, appearances here and there! I’m good!’

“Right about now we would be slaving in 100 degree heat, practicing twice a day, while putting our bodies at risk for nothing.”

He says later he was just joking … of course he was.

Rashard Mendenhall of the Steelers (@R_Mendenhall) says via Twitter in early May that ‘There is not an ignorant bone in my body.’ His Twitter account offers evidence to the contrary. As people around the world began reacting to the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death with a mix of joy and relief, the 23-year-old Mendenhall takes a different approach:

‘What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…’

‘I believe in God. I believe we’re ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge. Those who judge others, will also be judged themselves.’

‘For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn in hell and piss on his ashes, I ask how would God feel about your heart?’

‘There is not an ignorant bone in my body. I just encourage you to #think’

Charlie Villanueva of the Bucks (@CV31) causes a stir during halftime of a game against Boston at the end of the 2009 season as Milwaukee is desperately trying to hold on to the final Eastern Conference playoff spot:

So now you have a better idea of why we want to see all athletes get some social media training. They are still going to make mistakes, but the more training they get the smarter they will be. I guess these guys did provide the news media with something to talk about though….

Let us know what other stupid statements professional athletes have made in social media and we will share them here. Let us know your thoughts.

ESPN Analyst Reports on Bulging Dicks

Slips of tongue and verbal mistakes are not only limited to athletes like Amare Stoudemire, who was all over the news this week with his foolish tweet that cost him $50,000 in fines and a lot of goodwill. It seems that ESPN analyst, Andy Katz, had a little verbal mistake when he meant to report on former Ohio State basketball star’s potential medical problems. What he said was actually slightly different from the truth and will go down as one of the all time best sports bloopers!

It seems the Ohio State star experienced draft day disappointment although the rest of the world got a kick from Katz’s report on the issue. Sullinger would have likely been a top 10 pic but his medical condition gave many teams pause in how this would all play out. A number of teams were concerned in his pre draft workouts, interviews and medical examinations that he might not be able to play up to his full potential due to his reported medical problem. According to Katz, Sullinger’s “bulging dicks” was the reason that many of the teams passed him by in the early rounds. Of course this was a verbal mistake and he meant to say bulging disks, but once it is out there… it is out there.

This blooper seems to be tailor made for the You Tube era, where the video has received tens of thousands of views. You see, nobody is safe from exposure in this social media world, because there is always someone watching and ready to report. While obviously all fo the training in the world could not have prevented this social media snafu, the more social media training sports figures receive, the better prepared they will be when something unavoidable happens. There are a number of things Kats should have done in this case, but instead he has remained silent and let the social media world have a field day with his video. Oh well… you might as well enjoy the video too!

Award winning social media agency focuses on responsible and effective social media skill development for athletes of all ages and levels

The Big Fat Mouth, the award winning social media agency, announced the formation of Social Media Coach for Athletes. This new division will direct its social media training programs exclusively to professional, collegiate, aspiring amateur and high school athletes and will be run under the supervision of Peter Soumas in his role as Executive Vice-President.

Social Media Coach For Athletes (SMCA) offers a variety of programs dedicated to responsible and effective social media skill development for this highly followed and scrutinized segment of the social media population. Just as each athlete’s goals for using social media are different at every level of their athletic career, the required skills and training are also significantly different. Every athlete has a brand that they have created and reinforce every day by their actions on and off the field. Their activity in social media is the single most important and often neglected tool in building and maintaining their personal brands.

In today’s sports world, athletes are coached in every aspect of their game, including position skills, speed,, strength, conditioning, agility, nutrition, sports psychology and more. Beginning at the college level athletes are coached on how to answer questions from press and news media, but very few are coached on how to responsibly use social media, not to mention on how to use it to build their brand and future opportunities. With SMCA’s programs and proper coaching, professional athletes can not only enhance their brand image, but significantly enhance their income and future earning potential.

Jonathan Ressler, founder of The Big Fat Mouth and The Social Media Badass, renowned for creating and executing social media marketing strategies and campaigns for some of the largest brands, celebrities and athletes in the world, identified a real need in the world of sports. “Social Media has revolutionized the sports world at every level by providing unparalleled access to athletes and information. The problem is that nobody has trained these high profile social media users to understand the power of essentially having an open microphone in front of them at all times,” said Ressler.

At the high school level, SMCA focuses on showing the student-athlete how to use social media responsibly and how their activities can affect themselves, their team, their school and even their family. Further, as social media has become the most important tool in the recruiting process, student-athletes need to know how to create and enhance their personal brand to garner exposure and ensure that they are projecting the best possible image to potential future coaches. College athletic departments have people whose responsibilities include reviewing the social media behavior of a prospective student-athlete. Improper or inappropriate social media behavior will most certainly have a damaging effect on a prospect’s chances according to collegiate coaches. SMCA trains and mentors the student and their family to ensure they have the tools necessary to maximize exposure and opportunities in today’s sports world.

Ressler says “The high school student is using social media as their main communication tool with their friends day in and day out, and it is certainly the single largest shift in the way we communicate since the advent of television. The problem is that the way a student-athlete uses social media with their friends is radically different than how they need to be using it for the recruiting process. We provide each student with a comprehensive game plan and guidelines on how to maximize their efforts, increase visibility and truly build the value of their personal brand.”

SMCA provides live or Skype one-on-one training, live seminars, team and organization training and guidelines, with online training options becoming available before the end of May. Each live training package is customized to the individual athlete where goals are identified and a specific strategy and game plan are created, exactly like every other aspect of an athletes training regimen.

Soumas believes this new division is the perfect compliment to the existing agency work for brands including Barnes & Noble, Boehringer Ingelheim, The Real Housewives of New York, The Pittsburgh Steelers and many others. “We have been working with many top companies, entertainment properties and sports organizations to guide them in creating and reinforcing their brand image in the social media world. Individual athletes are brands unto themselves and working with them individually encompasses many of the same principles and practices. Our groundbreaking work with so many of these companies make us uniquely qualified to help athletes reach their maximum potential as quickily as possible by avoiding rookie mistakes and social media pitfalls.

The Big Fat Mouth and Social Media Coach For Athletes headquarters are located in Cary, North Carolina with satellite offices in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami and Indianapolis.

College Recruiting Tips To Keep You In The Game

By now you know that every coach sends out hundreds or not thousands of letters to prospective recruits every year. You also know that just because you have received a letter form the coach does not mean you are being actively recruited, it simply means they know your name and want to see how interested you are in their program. For the sake of this article, let’s assume that you are interested, have responded to the letter, filled out the questionnaire and made some type of contact with the coach. You are doing everything right and want to make sure you stay on that coach’s list of prospects. What can you do to make sure that you stay on the list? These are three things that may cause a high school athlete in the recruiting process to be removed from a coach’s list, but are completely preventable.

Academics

There have been millions of stories of athletes who have been admitted to colleges that they were completely unqualified to attend, but the coach pulled some strings to get them in…even though they could not read or write. We are not saying that has never happened, but the stories are greatly exaggerated. You MUST keep your grades up and keep working all the way through the end of you senior year. Make sure that you meet all of the core course requirements and core GPA requirements. Even if you have struggled with some of the core classes, it does not mean that you are immediately off the list. As long as you can show that you know you have struggled and have a plan to improve your grades, the coach may choose to keep you on the list and even help you determine what the best course of action is to get into the school. The one thing you never want to do is withhold or delay your transcipts. That is an immediate red flag and will likely be removed from the list immediately. If the team wants you badly enough, they will work with you to get you on the right track and show you what you may need to do in order to attend school there. Like we said earlier, don’t expect miracles, but know that the coach will do what he can to help you help yourself.

Evaluation

Of course one of the most important elements to staying on the coach’s list is your athletic ability. You must be sure to have a highlight video where you showcase your abilities and where you are easy to identify. If you are hard to find in the video, you are making it hard on the coach who is probably looking at a hundred highlight tapes. The more difficult your is to watch, the more likely you are to be dropped from the list. You should also have one complete game film that you can send to the coach at a moments notice in the event they ask for one. Remember that they will watch a highlight video to decide if they want to evaluate a game film. If you don’t have ne wen they ask, it can hurt your chances of staying on the list. You may even want to take a look at getting a quality third party evaluation to be sure that you are being objective.

Parents

Yep…you read that correctly. Parents who create problems can be one very big reasons prospects are dropped from a coach’s list. If one of you parents is a problem at every game, you can be sure that the college coaches do not want to deal with them. Don’t think for a minute that your high school coach will not tell your prospective college coach about your parents. If they had to deal with problem parents for the past 4 years they are going to let the recruiting coach know. Once the coach hears about a problem with the parents, you can be sure that you are going to be dropped from the list.

Those are just three factors that could get you dropped from a coach’s list of recruits, but there are many more. These three are in your control, so be sure that you give yourself the best chance by making sure you have all of these items well in hand during the recruiting process.

The Redskins leading wide receiver, Jabar Gaffney, was released from the team today after leading the Washington receivers in almost every category last year. The 10-year veteran was scheduled to make $2.65 million this year and was recently quoted as saying he was willing to restructure his deal if that would keep him in a Redskins uniform. The answer was clearly NO!

Jabar Gaffney—Keith Allison (Flickr.com)

As you may remember, Gaffney had a very public meltdown on Twitter last month where he made a bunch of Tweets that quickly became a trending topic around the world. His inflammatory comments were wild accusations against other players and his “future ex-wife.” The next day Gaffney had to come out and say his Twitter account was hacked and he did not make those tweets, but if you read the text, they were clearly him. This was also not the first time Gaffney has created trouble for himself with Twitter. After a loss to the Dallas Cowboys last year, he told a fan to “kill himself” and then re-tweeted another comment from a fan that said essentially the same thing. Both incidents became national news and shone a very ugly light on both Gaffney and the Washington Redskins, not to mention the NFL. After first defending himself with a lame “freedom of speech” excuse he later apologized.

Was the irresponsible use of social media the main reason Gaffney was released? Probably not, but when you add up all the factors that came into making the decision to release him, that certainly played a significant role. Teams, coaches and management already have their hands full with the day to day operations of a professional team, so dealing with athletes who create problems is not something they have the time to deal with. One time is a mistake, but twice is is a different story. If you look at his recent tweets, it seems as if Gaffney has not learned his lesson even as of today.

The problem professional sports faces is that social media is essentially an open microphone in front of these guys 24 hours a day and they have not been trained in how to use it. The answer is to provide training on how athletes at every level should use social media for positive benefit, but most teams do not have the time or resources to train them. We would argue that they don’t have the time and resources not to train them! Once a social media crisis begins, it drains more resources than the few hours it would take to train these guys and show them how they can ruin their careeers and future opportunities by not thinking. At the very least, these guy should know how to invoke their Social Media Miranda Rights when the time is right. They don’t have to share everything that is going on in their lives with the world at large. They can text or call friends with the stuff that is personal, yet they want to have a certain “badass” image until it comes back to bite them.

In this new world, social media training has to start early, like in the high school years, so these guys are responsible and know what is at stake when they reach the pro ranks and have a lot more at stake. The sports world is littered with examples of guys blowing their careers by not thinking before they talk. At some point, someone has to step up and get these guys social media training for professional athletes so they have can maximize their career and post career opportunities. Until that happens, we are going to continue to see guys lose millions of dollars because they couldn’t control the urge to shoot of their big fat mouths.

How Social Media Has Changed The Sports World

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past few years, you can’t help but notice how social media has changed the behavior of both athletes and fans in the sports world. It is not only limited to the professional ranks, as college and high school athletes have all jumped on the bandwagon. We would even venture to say that as this generation that grew up with social media as one of their main means of communication, we will only see social media impact sports in more and more ways and with more intensity.

Statistics show that more than 80% of sports fans monitor social media sites while they are watching the game on television and over 60% do when they are actually at the game. Of course, the players are all in social media in a big way and they have created more buzz with their social media properties than through any other channels. Take Tim Tebow for example, who had more than 9,000 people tweeting EVERY SECOND after he threw a touchdown pass in the playoff game against the New York Jets. Jeremy Lin picked up 550,000 new Twitter followers in one month after he exploded onto the NBA scene. It should also come as no surprise that soccer, with its worldwide fan base, boasts the two most followed athletes on Twitter. They are Brazilian born star Kaka, and Portugal’s Ronaldo.

While Twitter and Facebook are the big ones, many athletes are using YouTube and other platforms to achieve their goals. For example high school athletes use social media in the recruiting process as a way to communicate and interact with college coaches. Those same coaches say they use social media as a way to keep tabs on what a potential recruit is doing and who else they are talking with. It is an extremely powerful tool in the college recruiting process which has changed the game in the high school ranks in different ways that it has in the pros.

Take a look at this infographic put together by KT Tape that shows how social media has changed sports over the past few years.
