Athletes and Social Media – No Shortage of Dumb Comments

A Sampling of Dumb Things Athletes Said In Social Media

Just because  the word “professional” appears in front of the word athlete, does not mean they act professionally off the field.  In fact, there is no shortage of really dumb comments in a variety of social media outlets from some of the most recognizable athletes in the world.  You see these men and women are trained in every aspect of the game they play, but are never trained in them social media game.  they are not trained in the game of life and as such, they tend to say some really stupid stuff that haunts them for years to come.  Social Media Coach For Athletes provides clients with comprehensive training on how and when to use social media to make sure they do not make comments like these…

Wayne Rooney dumb tweet

Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) is the biggest star on one of the world’s most famous teams so you’d think he’d be used to a little criticism. But the Manchester United striker took exception to some clown harrassing him on Twitter and challenged the dude to a fight. Smart!

Here’s the tweet the set Rooney off: “Rooney ya fat whore ill smash ya head in with a pitchin wedge an bury ya with a ballast fork ya fat ugly lil nonse.” (Huh? We hope this makes better sense to our pals across the pond)

Here is Rooney’s reply: I will put u asleep within 10 seconds hope u turn up if u don’t gonna tell everyone ur scared u little nit. I’ll be waiting

(Coming to pay-per-view soon … we hope!)

dumb reggie bush twitter comments
Reggie Bush of the Saints (@reggie_bush) has found himself in hot water a few times for the content on his Twitter feed. The latest misstep comes in early May when he writes about how much he’s enjoying the NFL lockout:

‘Everybody complaining about the lockout! Shoot I’m making the most of it! Vacation, rest, relaxing, appearances here and there! I’m good!’

“Right about now we would be slaving in 100 degree heat, practicing twice a day, while putting our bodies at risk for nothing.”

He says later he was just joking … of course he was.

Rashard Mendenhall dumb tweets

Rashard Mendenhall of the Steelers (@R_Mendenhall) says via Twitter in early May that ‘There is not an ignorant bone in my body.’ His Twitter account offers evidence to the contrary. As people around the world began reacting to the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death with a mix of joy and relief, the 23-year-old Mendenhall takes a different approach:

‘What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side…’

‘I believe in God. I believe we’re ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge. Those who judge others, will also be judged themselves.’

‘For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn in hell and piss on his ashes, I ask how would God feel about your heart?’

‘There is not an ignorant bone in my body. I just encourage you to #think’

Chris Douglass -Roberts Dumbass tweet

Chris Douglas-Roberts of the Milwaukee Bucks (@cdouglasroberts) also takes exception to the celebration surrounding the news that a U.S. special forces raid killed terrorist mastermind Osama Bin-Laden in Pakistan:’It cost us (USA) roughly $1,188,263,000,000 to kill that………..guy. But we #winning though. Haaaa. (Sarcasm)’

Antonio Cromartie Dumbass tweet

Antonio Cromartie of the Jets (@A_Cromartie31) threatens to ‘smash’ Matt Hasselbeck’s face after the two mix it up on Twitter over the NFL’s labor issues, but one of our favorite tweets comes as the chatty cornerback rips the training camp spread while playing with the San Diego Chargers:

‘Man we have to have the most nasty food of any team. Damn can we upgrade 4 str8 years the same ish maybe that’s y we can’t we the SB we need.’

Stevie Johnson Dumbass Tweets

Stevie Johnson of the Bills (@StevieJohnson13) gets angry with God of all potential target after dropping a touchdown pass in overtime last November in what would have been a huge upset over the Pittsburgh Steelers:

Charlie Villanueva Dumbass Tweet

Charlie Villanueva of the Bucks (@CV31) causes a stir during halftime of a game against Boston at the end of the 2009 season as Milwaukee is desperately trying to hold on to the final Eastern Conference playoff spot:

‘In da locker room, snuck to post my twitt. We’re playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half. Coach wants more toughness. I gotta step up.’

So now you have a better idea of why we want to see all athletes get some social media training.  They are still going to make mistakes, but the more training they get the smarter they will be.  I guess these guys did provide the news media with something to talk about though….

Let us know what other stupid statements professional athletes have made in social media and we will share them here.  Let us know your thoughts.
